THE CUBE, a 12 hour installation-concertThe Cube is situated between an installation and a concert. A cube-shaped screen eight metres in length and three metres in height: film-makers and musicians are present inside and remain there. The public has the freedom to circulate or to stop before one of the surfaces. Presented visually is a play of light, projections and shadows; the image in motion. The Cube becomes a surprising sculpture, creating unexpected movements of light. Musically, a game is apparent between the soundboard of a piano and various resonant objects and an assembled electro-acoustic apparatus. The entire experience is improvised. Images and sounds react with each other while maintaining their independence. The idea is to work on a multitude of image styles (of varied content and sources) and sounds (electronic and acoustic sources with spatialization on several loudspeakers), and to develop a game of improvisation between the two.
The Cube plays for a duration of 12 hours in the darkness of the foundry. At once sensitive and malleable, the Cube is constituted of invisible, turbulent and unpredictable elements. It can send resonant vibrations into orbit and serve as a support for luminous phenomena. The Cube works as a subtle crucible, creating a vast and beautiful disorder.
The members of the Cube live in Grenoble and are involved (as members and/or founders) in METAMKINE Intervention Cell, a group which presents performances where music and film are manipulated live), in Art Toung!, a program of experimental cinema at 102 rue d'Alembert in Grenoble, and in Ateliers MTK, an artisanal film laboratory for the development, printing and special effects of Super 8 and 16 mm films.
KHÔRA, Installation/performance"Khôra: Space, matter, spatial site. (...) Territory which surrounds an agglomeration, the undetermined space in relation to the space organized by man."
Khôra is a sound installation/performance uniting various invented acoustic instruments constructed from extremely simple materials. Initially intended for strictly human control, the instruments become enriched at the heart of Khôra through a mechanical system which assures a degree of precision, strength and constancy which transcends human limitations.
Tu-Yo and
bols, cannettes sifflantes animate the space with sounds in their raw state, wielding their natural depth without amplification or treatment in a "hyper-reality" which borders on the unreal. Dispersed here and there around the site, their vibrations surround and envelop the public in their resonant sweep. An essential yet unbinding parameter: listeners are free in their movements, free to follow their own path amidst the multitude of sonic generators, to linger at chosen acoustic sites, and to create a personal perceptive universe from the offered material.
The calm of the sonic ambience created by the gradual and permanent evolution of each tone, as well as the gentle luminosity of the instruments within the obscurity, lend the space an exceptionally meditative character. An invitation to encounter a new form of listening, of looking, a call to contemplation, Khôra seeks to propose a context in which the listener can at once commune with him or herself and open towards a new reality.
An intuitive creator, Jean-François Laporte approaches music through concrete experimentation with sound matter. His compositions are the result of a method of working in complicity with raw material, his creative gestures proposing constructions which draw directly from the encountered sounds.
